Monday 25th – Friday 29th July 2022

Another Condensed Update

I had decided to head back to the Cyclades from Kos, but this meant sticking around for almost another week because the ferry only ran on Saturdays. I didn’t mind because Kos Town is a great place to relax and there are plenty of good food options, but it doesn’t make for an exciting set of blog updates. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money and I felt like I had already explored the island as much as I wanted to, so my days were pretty routine. Here’s a summary of what I did, mostly for the sake of completeness – I doubt it’s that interesting to read!

Monday 25th – Hotel Move and Back to the Gym

On my own again and with no sightseeing plans, I had plenty of time to hit the gym. I returned to Fitness for Life and bought a week pass for €25. I thought the gym opened at 9, so I headed down after my final Hotel Sonia breakfast only to discover it opened at 8 am. I had a great chest and arms workout, then went back to the hotel for a shower and to pack my bags. I was moving back to the nearby Astron Hotel to save some money and have the bonus of a swimming pool if I didn’t want to visit the beach.

I didn’t want to haul all my luggage over in one trip, so I wheeled my suitcase across first and left it at reception. Then I went back a few minutes later with my rucksack once I had checked out and settled my bill. My room was ready earlier than expected, so I was able to check in right away and hit the pool. After a relaxing few hours, I was about to take a nap because I hadn’t slept that well the night before when I remembered I had a video call with my parents at 6! We had a great catch-up and agreed to talk again soon once I had moved on to other islands.

For dinner, I decided to go to Twin Dragon again for more delicious Chinese food. It was just as good as before and the 0.5 litres of house white wine helped me sleep when I got back.

Tuesday 26th – Thursday 28th July

During the next three days, I followed a similar routine: starting the day with breakfast at the hotel, working in my room, soaking up the sun by the pool, and then hitting the gym in the late afternoon. I’d been struggling to get a good night’s sleep, so I found it easier to exercise later in the day rather than in the morning.

For dinner on Tuesday, I went to Vinylio but was a bit disappointed with the chicken penne main course – the chicken was quite tough and the dish lacked flavour. On Wednesday, I dined at a restaurant called Agora in the Old Town and had a delicious meal: starting with pita bread and tzatziki, followed by battered cod bites with fries. On Thursday, I had planned to go to Twin Dragon for dinner, but when I arrived, I changed my mind and decided I didn’t feel like Chinese food. I remembered seeing an Italian place further down the road towards Sunburnt Arms, so I walked down to check it out. It was called La Trattoria and I had a delicious pizza with a Coke, as they didn’t have any cheap house wines available.

Friday 29th July

On my last day in Kos, I decided to switch things up and explore a new spot. I walked down to the beach and stumbled upon Jackson’s – a beach bar and restaurant with sunbeds that played fairly lively music. When I arrived, I had my pick of beds, but the place soon filled up with mostly younger tourists. While I felt a little out of place being alone (and well above the average age), I still enjoyed the atmosphere as a change of scenery.

After soaking up some sun, I headed back to the gym for my final workout of the trip – back, legs, triceps, and abs. Then, I returned to my favourite restaurant one last time: MamaRosa Pizzeria! I usually don’t have wine there, as they don’t have any cheap/house options, but as it was my last night, I treated myself to a glass of red wine, which was delicious.
