I stayed at Astron Hotel twice in July 2022, on either side of a visit to my favourite hotel, Hotel Sonia. Why stay here at all, you might ask, if you have a favourite already? Well, as much as I love Hotel Sonia (check out the review to see why), it’s not quite on the budget end of accommodation and I was keen to save money where I could. My girlfriend came to visit me during the trip, so I splashed out on Hotel Sonia while she was there, but wanted something a bit cheaper before and after her stay.

Having been to Kos Town before, I knew Astron Hotel had a great location right on the harbour and just a short walk from the beach – it’s probably a better location than Hotel Sonia, to be fair to it. It also has a swimming pool which, aside from the cost, was the main reason I chose to stay here. There aren’t many central hotels in Kos Town with their own pool and this is probably the most central of the ones that do.

The pool isn’t huge considering the size of the hotel, but it’s enough for a cooling dip when you’ve been soaking up the sun on one of the sun loungers. The loungers are at a slight premium and prone to being fully occupied late in the afternoon, but in the morning and early afternoon I never struggled to find space.

Breakfast is a typical buffet affair. I wouldn’t say it’s the best quality but it’s commensurate with the price and I never failed to eat enough. The staff are very friendly, especially the guy at reception who made a considerable effort to let me check in early and pick a better room even though the hotel was quite full.

I would rate Astron Hotel 5 stars, but the rooms are quite dated and could do with refurbishing – in particular, there are only two plug sockets in the entire room and one of them is right next to the front door, so not very accessible for things like a phone charger. Also, the WiFi was very unstable while I was there, often very slow or with no connection at all. The rooms are also not that well soundproofed and because it’s more of a budget hotel, it’s popular with groups of party-going youngsters who are prone to making a fair amount of noise. It wasn’t a constant problem, but something to be aware of if you’re a light sleeper.
