Exploring on Foot

Yesterday, I had the luxury of a moped to get around Aegina and saw most tourist spots on the island. With one more full day here, I was content to stay local and explore more of Aegina Town on foot.

A Slow Start

I’d slept poorly again and was still unsure why: the mattress, while not luxurious, felt comfortable enough, and the room was calm and quiet. I woke at 6 am, passing the time until breakfast by working on the Aegina YouTube video I’d started last night and updating my blog notes.

After filling up on my usual selection of breakfast bits, I decided to walk into Aegina Town to record some content for the YouTube video. I had a work meeting scheduled for midday so I couldn’t travel further afield anyway. I headed towards the harbour, then south along the promenade, stopping when I reached the Church of Isodia Theotokou as there didn’t seem to be much beyond that point.

I retraced my steps north, stopping at the harbour to photograph the small Chapel of Saint Nicholas and one of the flying dolphin boats that I’d arrived on a couple of days ago:

Early Snack Lunch

Having only eaten a light breakfast, I was hungry by 11 and chose to have an early lunch before my work meeting. I stopped at a local cafe, ordering a Freddo espresso and a chocolate crepe with mint ice cream (nothing like a healthy meal!) Once the sugar rush kicked in, I left the cafe and returned to the hotel.

Work Meetings and Afternoon Naps

The work meeting went smoothly and didn’t take long. I didn’t have much planned for the afternoon, and my energy levels had dropped once the sugar rush was over, so I stayed in my room working for a while, then managed a reasonable nap to catch up on some of the sleep I’d missed overnight.

Drone or No Drone?

I wanted to use my drone again to get some aerial shots of Aegina Town, but, always mindful of using it in crowded areas, I wanted to find a quiet spot to launch from. I headed out from the hotel in search of such a spot, but despite walking around for a while, I couldn’t see anywhere suitable. Defeated, I returned to the hotel to swap my drone equipment for my camera and headed back out, determined to film something.

I started west of the hotel this time, just south of the archaeological museum near the Temple of Apollo. I found some cool graffiti artwork painted onto a wall north of the bus station:

Cloudy Afternoon, Early Dinner

The weather had clouded over as the day went on. I gave up taking photos as they never look great against an overcast sky. It was nearly 5 pm, and having had an early lunch, I was ready for dinner. To save a bit of money, I chose to eat on the cheap and found a taverna towards the south end of the harbour serving gyros, which I had with 0.5 litres of rose wine. The food was tasty and filling; the wine tasted fine despite being almost as pale as white wine and went down far too easily.

I found myself back at the hotel by 7:30 – the downside to an early dinner – but was content to chill out in my room and plan the next few days.
