Captain’s Hotel, Kos Town, Kos

Review Rating: 2/5

Date of Visit: July 2021

I booked four nights at Captain’s Hotel in a bit of a rush after deciding to leave Tilos a day earlier than planned. I’m travelling around Greece for three months and trying to stick to a £50 per day budget, including breakfast, where possible.

Having never visited Kos, I wasn’t sure which resort to base myself in, but I decided to spend the first few nights in Kos Town to walk from the ferry to my accommodation easily. I spent a while researching options on Booking.com while checking TripAdvisor reviews in the hope of avoiding anything dodgy. Captain’s Hotel seemed to get reasonable feedback, was close-ish to the beach and town centre, included breakfast and even had its own pool (wasn’t a requirement, but a nice bonus). It was also under budget at €52.50 per night (roughly £45).

On arrival, the reception staff were friendly, and the place seemed nice enough, but sadly, that’s where the good news ends. The room was small, which wasn’t a problem, but the beds proved to be very uncomfortable, with thin mattresses and lumpy pillows. The air conditioning was weak and unable to cope with the high 30 Celsius temperatures. The bathroom was cramped, with a tiny shower and garish green tiles that looked to be from the 1970s.

Breakfast was equally disappointing: a meagre selection of dry bread, sliced ham and cheese, DIY instant coffee powder and sickly fake orange juice.

The pool and location were the main highlights, though the pool is shared with the Pavlos hotel next door and is prone to getting rowdy in the afternoons.

Ultimately, I moved to a different hotel in Kos Town after my four days were up because I was fed up with sleeping poorly and having to pay for my own breakfast because the hotel’s offering wasn’t good enough.
