For my third visit to Ios, I wanted to be even closer to Mylopotas Beach than before. Having stayed twice up the hill behind the beach at Holidays Inn Ios and Manthos Place, I was a bit tired of walking up the fairly steep road every time I wanted to go back to my room.

Deep Blue Rooms & Apartments was slightly more expensive than my previous choice of accommodation – costing me €80 per night in peak season – and lacked its own pool, but with its proximity to the beach that wasn’t a problem. Breakfast was also included so in real terms the cost increase wasn’t significant.

Its location is practically perfect: just above the centre point on Mylopotas beach, meaning it’s equally close to amenities such as the mini market and tavernas at the north end of the beach road and to Far Out Village and beach club at the southern end.

The owners have a minibus and provide free transfers to and from the port, which felt like a real luxury as I’ve gotten pretty used to making do with public transport. It just happened that I was the only guest arriving from my ferry, so I got to pretend I was a VIP on my own in the back of a pretty nice van, complete with tinted windows and leather seats.

Almost as impressive was my apartment room: number 15 on the upper floor was right above the reception/breakfast area, but had a huge balcony and was quite spacious inside too – a double and single bed with plenty of floor space to walk around and shelving for storage. A compact kitchenette provided all the utensils you might need to prepare meals, though I always chose to eat out and didn’t have to worry about breakfast as it was included in the room rate.

Breakfast was slightly different every day, and served to your table rather than a buffet. Though I didn’t like all of the items every day, there was always enough to fill me up, including free refills of coffee. Most days included toast with butter and jam, yoghurt with honey, a small cake, coffee, orange juice, eggs and some kind of savoury item: either a sandwich or pastry.

The hotel is family run and everyone is very friendly. I really enjoyed my stay and would definitely recommend it as one of the best places on Ios, particularly if you like being near the beach.
