Review Rating: 5/5

Date of visit: June 2019

After a great 3-night stay at Yperia in Aegiali, we feared disappointment from our next hotel if it didn’t measure up. Fortunately, the Amorgion was even better!

We arrived in Katapola by bus, which drops off in the centre of the bay just opposite the beach. After a light lunch, it was closing at 2 pm so we began the walk east away from the bay towards the hotel. It’s a good 10-minute walk (15 if you aren’t a fast walker), and gets progressively more uphill as you approach the hotel. To be honest, this is the hotel’s only weak point – in the hot sun, the walk is just a touch too far to be pleasant. At night, much of the route isn’t lit either, so a torch is a must. The trade-off though is its views over the resort and peaceful setting.

When we reached the hotel entrance, we followed the signs to the reception which takes you past the fantastic pool area. Compared to Yperia, the pool is a great size and is surrounded by a spacious deck with loungers placed well apart from each other. Georgia, the hotel manager, greeted us with a big smile and walked us to our room while explaining the facilities and breakfast options.

At the Amorgion, rooms have names instead of numbers: our room was called Kisiri and was located at the back of the hotel. This meant we didn’t get views of the pool or Katapola Bay, but it was a quiet location and did offer good views of the hillside towards Chora.

The apartment consisted of one large room with a double bed, table, and kitchenette, plus a second smaller bedroom with two single beds, and a bathroom with a shower-over-bath, sink and toilet.

The rooms were well furnished and nicely decorated, and the air conditioning worked well in the main room – but worth knowing that the smaller bedroom did not have its own unit, so was liable to get a bit stuffy with the door closed.

Breakfast was an optional extra at 8€ per person. We skipped this on our first morning due to an early start picking up a hire car to explore the island. On the second and final morning, we did have breakfast, and found it was excellent value for money: tea/coffee, orange juice, bread, yoghurt and honey, fruit, cereal and fried eggs or omelettes were all offered for a fixed price.

What really made this hotel special for us was the fantastic staff, including Georgia, who were always around to answer questions and supply us with snacks and drinks at the pool. The pool is the other star attraction: it’s so peaceful laying on a sun lounger with the breeze on your skin, and barely any other sound.

As a resort, we found Katapola slightly better than Aegiali, in terms of restaurants and general ‘feel’. It’s also closer to Chora and provides good access by car to the south side of the island. For this reason, we’d probably stay in Katapola again on our next visit, and it would be hard to stay anywhere but Amorgion!
