Introduction

My friend Ed and I chose to stay at the Alkistis Hotel for one night at the start of a small island-hopping holiday in early July 2018 (read about it here). It was our second time on the island, and we were looking for somewhere within our budget and in the right location – this hotel ticked both boxes, as you’ll see below.

Location

Situated on the eastern end of Agios Stefanos beach, the hotel is on a steep-ish hillside close to the main port of Tourlos and just a few kilometres from the airport. It was ideal for our short stay as we could walk to the port to take the SeaBus across to Mykonos Town and catch our ferry to Naxos the following day.

Rooms

The rooms at Alkistis are on the basic side but were as expected given the relatively low budget cost – this is Mykonos, so it wasn’t cheap. Still, compared to other accommodations on the island, it was at the lower end of the price range.

Being located on a fairly steep hillside, the accommodation is split into several blocks that spread up the hill away from the reception and beach road. Ed was lucky to get a room just behind reception, but I was less fortunate and had to drag my large suitcase up several steps to one of the blocks further back. Worse still, the room numbers for each block weren’t well signposted, so I went past my block and got a bit lost. With the assistance of a Greek cleaning lady, I discovered that each block has a basement level and, backtracking to the previous block, discovered my room down a set of stairs.

We found the rooms manageable for a single-night stay, but I wouldn’t want to be here much longer due to the basic level of comfort and amenities.

Service

The reception staff were very friendly and handled our check-in and departure efficiently. We also had a drink at the pool bar, and the breakfast buffet was reasonable if uninspiring.

Overall Experience

I’m always wary of rating hotels based on such a short duration, but I think 3/5 is pretty fair in this case – the rooms are basic. The accessibility issue with the hillside location is frustrating, even as a fairly fit person. I would probably rate Alkistis Hotel even lower, except that it did meet our needs and wasn’t far below my expectations, given the cost.

The location is pretty good, especially if you plan on taking a ferry and are happy to walk – the road is quite narrow, and there’s no proper footpath, but it’s manageable. The nearby beach is also quite nice.
