Highlights and Lowlights: A Greek Adventure to Remember

Another incredible trip is in the books! What made this journey even more special was the uncertainty leading up to it, with foreign travel hanging in the balance due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Yet, against the odds, my flight wasn’t cancelled, I dodged Covid-19, and I wasn’t even tested on arrival—phew!

Looking back, would I skip Serifos next time? Maybe. It didn’t quite hit the mark for me. But in the spirit of exploration and ticking off as many Greek islands as possible, I’m glad I gave it a chance. To the Serifos enthusiasts out there, I see you—it just wasn’t my vibe. Two nights were enough for me to realize it paled in comparison to Sifnos, which absolutely stole my heart.

Ah, Sifnos. What an unexpected delight! While I knew I’d enjoy Milos (spoiler: I did), Sifnos was an unknown gem that completely blew me away. I felt at home from the first moment I stepped onto Kamares Beach. It’s the kind of place you just know you’d love spending more time in.

If I had one regret, it’s that I didn’t branch out more with my dining choices. But when places like Camaron and Da Claudio serve up food so good it practically ruins your taste buds for anything else, it’s hard to experiment. Fun fact: Serifos is apparently known as a foodie island—a reputation I only discovered after my trip. Go figure!

On the flip side, Syros wasn’t quite my scene. To be fair, it wasn’t my pick, and I think I would’ve enjoyed it more with a travel companion. Ermoupoli felt more like a city break than the beachy, food-filled escapades I usually seek on solo holidays. It’s beautiful, no doubt, but next time I’d probably approach it differently.

Best of the Best

This time, I thought it’d be fun to highlight the absolute standouts from the trip. Here are my winners (and a few honourable mentions):

Best Accommodation

🏆 Winner: Abati Hotel, Serifos
While Serifos didn’t wow me, this boutique gem sure did. Small but stylish, with the most comfortable bed of the trip, it was a slice of luxury—though the steep climb to get there was no joke!

🎖️ Runner-up: Venus de Milo, Milos
Modern, clean, and perfectly located near both Adamas and Papikinou Beach, this place was a steal for the price.

Best Beach

🏆 Winner: Kamares Beach, Sifnos
No contest here! With its wide, sandy shores, shallow turquoise waters, and calm bay, Kamares might just be one of the best beaches I’ve ever visited in Greece. It’s even on par with Pori Beach in Koufonisia—high praise indeed.

🎖️ Runner-up: Firiplaka Beach (Milos) and Ganema Beach (Serifos) both made strong cases, but Kamares stole the crown.

Best Meal

🏆 Winner: Camaron Restaurant, Kamares, Sifnos
Two words: four-cheese tortellini. This dish was pure perfection, and every bite since has felt just a little bland in comparison.

🎖️ Runner-up: The mushroom moussaka at Tou Apostoli To Koutouki in Apollonia, Sifnos. A surprising meat-free delight that absolutely hit the spot.

Best Experience

🏆 Winner: Boat trip with Oniero, Milos
This was hands-down the best €100 I spent on the entire trip. A full day of exploring hidden coves, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and soaking up the beauty of Milos from the sea. Shoutout to Paul from TripAdvisor for the tip—I 100% recommend this to anyone visiting the island.

🎖️ Runner-up: Watching the golden-hour sun over Kamares from the cliffside Agios Simeon Church. It was a magical, reflective moment that felt like pure bliss.
