Review Rating: 4.5/5

Date of Visit: September 2022

Introduction

In need of accommodation for a few nights towards the end of my 2022 extended Greece vacation, I was arriving from the nearby island of Agistri. I planned to spend 3 nights on the mainland exploring Athens until my girlfriend came, and we headed off to Sifnos for the final part of my trip. I chose to stay in Piraeus as it’s cheaper than being closer to the centre of Athens and more convenient for the port. Achillon Hotel ticked all the right boxes: reasonably priced, great location, and the rooms looked clean and modern.

Reception / Arrival

The entrance to Achillon Hotel is unassuming and could easily be missed, albeit for the small sign above the door to reception. The check-in process was quick and easy. While travelling alone, I opted for a single room and was given the key to a small room on the fourth floor.

Rooms

Despite its compact size and single bed, it was well furnished and even included a small desk and chair, which came in useful for me to work on my laptop during my stay. The bed was very comfortable, and the shower and toilet unit was spacious and modern enough to be pleasant.

The room had a reasonably large balcony, though my fear of heights kept me from spending much time out there – four floors felt pretty high the one time I dared to peer over the railings to the street below! Although this area of Piraeus felt quiet, a benefit of being higher up was the reduction in street noise.

Location

I was confident the location was suitable in terms of being close to the port, but, being my first time staying in Piraeus, I wasn’t sure how I would find getting around and eating out. Although Achillon Hotel isn’t in a tourist hotspot, plenty of cafes and shops are within an easy 5-10 minute walk, mainly to the north and east. For evening meals, I ventured further southeast to the Pasalimani area of Piraeus, which has many restaurants. It’s about 10-15 minutes walk from the hotel, so it’s still not far and quite a pleasant stroll outside the midday sun.

Summary

Given that I paid just €40 per night at the beginning of September (still high season), I felt Achillon Hotel provided fantastic value and was very happy with my choice of accommodation in Piraeus. The rooms are lovely, the staff friendly, the location excellent and it’s ideal for the port and the Athens metro.
