Ios Travel Guide 2026: Where to Stay, Best Nightlife and Things to Do

Last updated: 6th April 2026

If you’ve heard of Ios, it’s probably the tiny Cycladic island’s reputation as a party destination for those seeking a cheaper and more pleasant alternative to Mykonos. While it’s true that young revellers are drawn to the island in peak season, this shouldn’t put you off visiting Ios, as it’s a big island with something to offer everyone, and the nightlife is confined to the late-night bars and clubs in Chora and the south end of Mylopotas Beach.

  • Getting there: Take a ferry from nearby Santorini, Naxos or Paros.
  • When to visit: May-June or late September for fewer crowds. July-early September for the best nightlife and peak summer sun.
  • Ideal duration: for relaxation, 3-5 nights; for partying, as long as your liver can handle!
  • Where to stay: Chora or Mylopotas for nightlife, Gialos Beach/Ormos (port area) for a more relaxed base.
  • Best activity: relax on one of the fabulous sandy beaches then enjoy a few (or more) drinks at one of Chora’s many bars.
  • Currency: Euro (cards are widely accepted).
  • Language: Greek (English is widely spoken).

Ios itself exudes a relaxed and peaceful vibe that has drawn us back no less than four times since our first visit in 2017. The island has many excellent beaches, great food and drink, and competitive pricing, making it an ideal destination for anyone looking for an affordable Greek island to relax and unwind.

For more background on Ios, check out our recent article: Is Ios the Most Misrepresented Greek Island?

Getting to Ios

Ios has no airport but is on a popular north-south ferry route between Mykonos, Naxos, Paros and Santorini, making it easily accessible throughout the summer tourist season. Use the search box below to find ferry ticket prices and availability:

The port is situated close to Chora in a small resort called Ormos. If you’re staying in Chora, it might seem tempting to walk to your accommodation but the ascent is quite steep, so if you’re travelling with luggage, it’s preferable to take the local bus rather than attempt it on foot.

We first visited in 2017 and found a bus waiting for the ferry on arrival. It only took 10 minutes to reach the nearby resort of Mylopotas, where the bulk of accommodation is located. There are regular buses throughout the day covering the main beaches and tourist resorts, though if you want to explore the island thoroughly, it’s better to rent transportation. The island is surprisingly large and can take some effort to explore due to its limited and winding road network.

Where to Stay on Ios

Unless you have a sufficient budget for the eye-wateringly expensive luxury Calilo resort, you’ll probably want to choose one of the following for your base on Ios:

Gialos Beach / Ormos (Port)

The port area offers maximum convenience in terms of your arrival and departure. Check out our Gialos / Ormos Resort Guide for more information.

Chora

Chora is the island’s capital and is located between the port and Mylopotas. Read our Ios Chora Resort Guide for more details.

Mylopotas

Mylopotas is the main tourist resort and arguably the most popular beach location. Check out our Mylopotas Guide.

Ios Attractions and Things to Do

Despite its central location within the Cyclades, Ios remains unspoiled and traditional, with many superb sandy beaches dotted around the coastline and plenty of decent restaurants. Much of the island is barren and uninhabited, with most of the island’s population concentrated in Chora.

Homer’s Tomb

The most well-known attraction on the island is the Tomb of Homer, the supposed burial place of the Greek Poet and author of the Iliad and the Odyssey. Whether he was responsible for those works remains disputed, as does his actual death and burial on Ios. However, a small tomb and headstone dedicated to Homer can be found in a remote setting to the far northeast of the island here. It takes about 30 minutes by quad bike and slightly less by car or moped.

The site is a little underwhelming and not entirely worth the effort, except perhaps as an opportunity to explore the island. Two small sandy bays can be found nearby on the northern coast (both called Plakotos), but neither is comparable to the excellent selection of beaches elsewhere on the island.

Skarkos

The island’s only other tourist attraction is the remains of a Bronze Age settlement called Skarkos. Situated just a few minutes north of Chora, it’s easily accessible and worth visiting for a bit of Greek history.

Ios Nightlife

If you like dancing and partying to great music with like-minded people from around the globe, Ios has plenty to offer. Most of the action begins late afternoon at FarOut Beach Club, where international guest DJs regularly visit throughout the main summer season between late June and early September. Events typically begin between 3-4 pm and finish by 11 pm, when everyone flocks to the many bars and clubs in the narrow painted streets of Chora. This transition is well supported by a near-constant stream of local buses, ferrying tourists from Mylopotas into the island’s capital, a few minutes away. Action in Chora goes on until dawn, so you’ll have no trouble burning off that party spirit – just don’t forget to see the sunshine and enjoy Ios’ many amazing beaches before you leave!

Elsewhere, you’ll find EREGO Beach and Pathos clubs near Koumpara Beach around the bay west of the port. EREGO is open during the daytime and offers a pool with good music, cocktails and a restaurant. Pathos opens late afternoon with a superb sunset infinity pool and fantastic music. Both are more expensive, so if you’re looking to party on a budget, it’s better to stick to Chora or the more reasonably priced Far Out Beach Club at Mylopotas.

Accommodation on Ios

Ios offers a diverse selection of accommodation to suit all kinds of travellers — from budget-conscious backpackers and solo adventurers to families, couples, and luxury seekers. The island has long balanced its youthful, energetic vibe with pockets of quiet sophistication, and its lodging options reflect that range.

For those travelling on a budget, Ios is one of the most welcoming islands in the Cyclades. There are numerous hostels, budget hotels, and simple guesthouses that offer clean, friendly accommodations at affordable rates. A long-time favourite among backpackers is Francesco’s, a centrally located guesthouse with stunning sunset views and a sociable, relaxed atmosphere. Similarly, Ios Resort offers great value with a pool, bar, and comfortable rooms just a short walk from the island’s nightlife, making it ideal for young travellers looking to meet others.

If you’re after mid-range comfort, there are plenty of family-run hotels and stylish boutique stays that strike a balance between convenience and character. Brother’s Hotel is a great example — a peaceful, well-maintained property with a personal touch, run by a welcoming local family. Levantes Ios Boutique Hotel is another standout, offering beautifully designed rooms with sea views and an infinity pool, without the hefty price tag of a luxury resort.

For travellers seeking luxury or boutique-style experiences, Ios has several exceptional options. Liostasi Hotel is the island’s premier five-star retreat, known for its refined design, infinity pool, gourmet restaurant, and attentive service. Perfect for honeymooners or anyone wanting to relax in style, it delivers a sophisticated experience just minutes from the island’s main attractions. For a more secluded stay, Calilo offers a unique luxury escape on the eastern side of the island. Set in a private coastal estate, it blends bold architecture with artistic flair, lush gardens, and high-end amenities.

If you prefer self-catering apartments or villas, Ios also has a wealth of options. These are perfect for families or anyone planning a longer stay. Hide Out Suites offers modern, minimalist villas with plunge pools and kitchenettes, ideal for travellers who want both comfort and privacy.

Whether you’re looking for affordable fun, cozy charm, or high-end indulgence, Ios has an impressive range of accommodation to match your travel style — and all with the unmistakable charm and beauty of the Cyclades.

Frequently Asked Questions on Ios (FAQs)

Here are some of the commonly asked questions asked by tourists when planning a visit to Ios:

Where is Ios

Ios is a Greek island in the Cyclades group, situated between Santorini and Naxos in the Aegean Sea.

How do I get to Ios?

You can reach Ios by ferry from Athens (Piraeus port) or from nearby islands like Santorini, Mykonos, or Naxos. Ios does not have an airport; the closest airports are in Santorini and Mykonos.

What is Ios known for?

Ios is famous for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and charming Chora (main town) with traditional whitewashed buildings. It’s also believed to be the final resting place of Homer, the ancient Greek poet.

When is the best time to visit Ios?

The best time to visit is from late May to early October. July and August are the busiest months, perfect for party-goers, while May-June and September-October offer a more relaxed atmosphere.

Is Ios just for partying?

While Ios has a reputation for its lively party scene, it also offers stunning beaches, hiking trails, cultural sites, and quiet villages for those seeking relaxation.

What are the best beaches in Ios?

Popular beaches include Mylopotas, Manganari, and Agia Theodoti. Mylopotas is the most famous, with crystal-clear waters and beach clubs.

Where should I stay in Ios?

Most visitors stay in Chora (the main town) or near Mylopotas Beach. Chora is great for nightlife, while Mylopotas offers beachfront resorts and easy access to water sports. The port area (Ormos) also offers affordable accommodation with convenient access to restaurants, shops and nearby Gialos Beach.

Do I need to rent a car or ATV in Ios?

Ios’ public bus network is excellent, with services between the port, Chora and Mylopotas running every 15 minutes in high season. Tickets are affordable (around €2), so you don’t need to rent a vehicle unless you want to explore more remote parts of the island. Buses also visit other beaches like Agia Theodoti, Psathi and Manganari.

Are there family-friendly activities in Ios?

Yes! Besides its nightlife, Ios has calm beaches, boat tours, historical sites like Skarkos (an ancient settlement), and beautiful hikes that are great for families.

Is Ios expensive?

Ios is generally more affordable than neighbouring islands like Mykonos or Santorini, though prices can rise in peak season (July-August). Partying at more upmarket clubs like Pathos and EREGO is a lot more expensive than most bars and clubs in Chora.

What should I pack for a trip to Ios?

Pack lightweight clothing, swimwear, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), comfortable walking shoes, and a light jacket for cooler evenings.

Are credit cards accepted in Ios?

Most hotels, restaurants, and shops accept credit cards, but it’s good to carry some cash for smaller businesses, remote areas and for using the local bus.

What is the nightlife like in Ios?

Nightlife centres around Chora, with a mix of lively bars, clubs, and late-night parties that continue until sunrise during peak season. Far Out Beach Club at Mylopotas Beach is where most people begin partying late afternoon, with international guest DJs performing during peak season (July-September). After 10pm, the action moves to Chora with a fleet of local buses on hand to ferry tourists from Mylopotas up to the capital.

Can I visit Ios on a day trip?

It’s possible from nearby islands like Santorini, but to fully experience Ios, including its beaches and nightlife, staying at least one night is recommended.

Ios Conclusions and Alternatives

Ios is an island of two opposites: you can come here for a relaxing, traditional Greek experience and enjoy good food and superb beaches while soaking up the Mediterranean sun, or you can sleep in until noon, grab a few hours by the beach or pool and then party from dusk until dawn. Whichever one you choose, Ios delivers. After five visits in seven years, it’s one of our favourite summer destinations.

If you’re looking for alternatives to Ios, it depends on what aspect of the island you’re most connected to. The only obvious candidate for nightlife is Mykonos, though we’re not a big fan due to its high prices and over-popularity. Good nightlife can be found on other Greek islands, such as Malia on Crete, Kavos on Corfu, and Laganas on Zante, to name just a few.

Those looking for a quieter and more typical Greek island experience should check out nearby Folegandros, Amorgos or our favourite island, Sifnos.
